1) Description of an Avatar Pack
An avatar pack is a folder that consists of other folders (known as groups) and images (known as image items, or items).
Here is an example of an avatar packs folder structure:
bmw_cars/m5_sedan.gif
bmw_cars/m5_sedan.png
bmw_cars/3_series/335i.gif
bmw_cars/3_series/335i.png
The avatar packs main folder and the name of this avatar pack is 'bmw_cars'. In this folder we have one group (3_series) and two image items (m5_sedan.gif/m5_sedan.png & 335i.gif/335i.png). Each image item consists of both a GIF and PNG, more info about this in Chapter 4.
Groups can be thought of as sections & subsections of an avatar pack. If for example your avatar pack has many shirt items, then create a folder in your avatar pack called shirts and place the shirt Image Items into that Group Folder. When running the Living Avatars Program, your avatar pack will be organized depending on the Group Folders that you created. Your Group Folders can also have sub-Group Folders as well (a folder underneath another Group Folder, ex: clothing->shirts->tshirts).
2) Naming Images & Folders
All folders and images can only be named with alphabet letters in lowercase (a->z), numbers (0->9), and the underscore character (_). Do NOT use spaces.
Examples of valid image names:
red_hat.gif
girls_blue_dress.gif
Examples of valid folder names:
animals/fish/
fast_cars/bmws/3_series/
3) Creating your Avatar Packs Folder
It's now time to create your avatar pack and the first step is to think of a name and create your avatar packs main folder. This is the folder that will hold all of the images items and other group folders. This is also the folder that you will place under the 'living_avatars/packs/' folder.
4) Creating Image Items
The Living Avatars program is all about stacking image items one on top of the other and then merging all of them into one final avatar. In order to do this the image items need to be transparent.
When it comes to transparency we have two image types, GIF & PNG. Basically, as many arists already know GIF doesn't do to well when it comes to transpareny. PNG on the other hand works great with transparency, unfortunately transparent PNGs are not supported by the most popular browsers today (Internet Explorer 6).
So the solution is to use both GIF & PNG images, display the PNG images to users with new browsers (Firefox & IE7) and display GIF to the rest.
When creating image items, you need to make both a GIF & PNG of that item. When installing an avatar pack, Living Avatars will search for gif images, and if found it will then search if that gif image has a PNG equivilant.
So in Photoshop when saving the image item, save to gif and then png. Example: hat.gif & hat.png. As you can see, with the exception of the extension the filenames must be exactly the same & inside the same group folder. Examples:
cars/bmw/bmw_325.gif
cars/bmw/bmw_325.png
cars/lexus_sc_430.gif
cars/lexus_sc_430.png
Image items can not exceed a width and height of 250px.
5) Creating Groups
You learned what groups are in Chapter 1. Creating groups couldn't be easier, just create a bunch of folders in your main avatar pack folder. Example:
cars/bmw/series_3/
cars/bmw/concept_cars/
cars/lexus/
cars/mercedes/
6) Installing your Avatar Pack
Now that you have completed your Living Avatars pack, upload it to the 'living_avatars/packs/' folder. Login to the Living Avatars admin panel and click on 'Install Avatar Pack', from there you can install your new avatar pack.
7) Sharing your Avatar Pack
Share your avatar pack with the community!
